1.The cutter is a knife sharpener
Take a pole of harden grass stem
Palm blossom sheath is made a winnowing tray;
A drop is made a sea
A fistful is made a mountain
The unfolding universe is made a teacher.

Ambil galah batang lintabung
Seludang dijadikan nyiru;
Setitik dijadikan laut
Sekepal dijadikan gunung
Alam terbentang dijadikan guru.)

2.Tanjong Katong its water is blue
A bathing place for beautiful maidens;
In the same village I still miss you
What more now in a land distant.
(Tanjung Katung airnya biru
Tempat bermandi si dara jelita;
Tinggal sekampung lagikan rindu
Inikan pula jauh di mata.)

3.The sea-bass, thread-fin
Jewfish, cat-fish;
Keep telling lies
Eventually you’ll be a thief.

4.A plank wooden window has its sides
A beached boat at the Isle of Angsa;
Beauty and good looks are due to kindness
A community develops because of its manners.

5.The champaden fruits are fenced outside
Use a pole to make them fall;
I am just a kid, a novice
Should I be wrong, do advise.

Ambil galah tolong jolokkan;
Saya budak baru belajar
Kalau salah, tolong tunjukkan.)

6.Tampines wood from the estuary
Brought by people to Melaka;
The juice of palm sugar tastes sweet
Kept too longer it becomes vinegar.

Berapa manis menira
Simpan lama menjadi cuka.)

7.A knife sharpener do give me
I will carve a dish-cover frame;
What madness are the fish at sea
At the mountain’s foot, they crave for baits.

1 Golden bananas are brought to sail
One ripens on top of a chest;
A debt of gold you can repay
A debt of kindness you’ll bring to your grave.
(Pisang emas dibawa belayar
Masak sebiji di atas peti;
Hutang emas boleh dibayar
Hutang budi dibawa mati.)

2 While on the island of Java
Friends invite to go fishing;
While in power, always be aware
The power of God is everlasting.
(Masa berada di Pulau Jawa
Rakan-rakan ajak menjala;
Masa berkuasa janganlah lupa
Kuasa Tuhan tidak terhingga.)

3 Though oil lights a lamp
Its wick must be just as long;
Though many are our friends
When one departs we are forlorn.
(Sungguh minyak menerangkan pelita
Hendaklah juga panjang sumbunya;
Sungguh banyak kawan-kawan kita
Hilang satu pilu rasanya.)

4 The crown prince is king of Linggi
Trading in the state of Palembang;
It is better to emulate stalks of paddy
Emulate not the behaviour of lalang.

Jangan diikut resmi lalang.)

5 A stable is built on the island of Daik
Let it be bright, set a night fishing line;
If originally from a good seed
Falling into the sea, you’ll be an island.
(Buat bangsal di Pulau Daik
Menahan taut, sambil mengilau;
Kalau asal benih yang baik
Jatuh ke laut menjadi pulau.)

6 A leafy stump on the city top
A distance of two fingers merely;
A myopic civet cat, a blind hawk
Only then can the chicken be happy.
(Punggur berdaun di atas kota
Jarak sejenggal dua jari;
Musang rabun, helang buta
Barulah ayam suka hati.)

7 Early in the morning, going to the field
Wanting to plant paddy seeds;
How high is Mount Ophir
My heart’s purpose is higher still.
(Pagi-pagi pergi ke ladang
Hendak menyemai benih padi;
Berapa tinggi Gunung Ledang
Tinggi lagi hajat di hati.)
